Video Balun Security Camera Installation – Northeast Remote Surveillance and Alarm, LLC what is a video balun? Video Baluns are used in place of shielded coaxial wire in analog security cameras and analog HD security camera installations. The advantage of video baluns over coaxial cable include savings in installation wiring as well as the ability to use active video baluns. Video baluns allow an installer to run as many as 4 analog camera feeds across a single cat 5 or cat 6 network cable if the security cameras are being powered at the location where they are installed. If the Security cameras are being powered on the same network cable that the signal is being transported on you would be limited to 2 analog security cameras on network cable cable. 4 of the wires in the 8 cat 5 or 6 cable would be used for transporting power to the security cameras. Each analog video security camera requires at least 2 wires to transmit Video feeds and two wires for power. Active video baluns amplify the video signal to allow longer cable runs.
Today many security companies use video baluns to cut installation costs. Video baluns reduce cabling costs and allow extended runs of cable to successfully transfer an analog camera or analog HD camera video feeds to a dvr or monitor. While many security companies have found success using video baluns for analog and analog HD we find the connections to be very fragile and unreliable due the very small fragile wires of network cat 5 and cat 6 cable at the termination points. At NRSEC we offer 3 year warranties and we do everything we can to eliminate the points of system failure.
Video Baluns have been used for many years successfully prior to the availabilty of IP cameras, fiber optics and wireless technologies.
Analog HD systems work well for smaller properties and security installations on a budget where it is easy to deploy multiple video recorders. Multiple video recorders can be viewed on a single PC using (VMS) Video Management Software. For larger properties and properties requiring cameras over 3 megapixels you should be using IP cameras.
