PTZ Security Cameras
PTZ security cameras, Do I need them? Northeast Remote Surveillance and Alarm, LLC – Our answer is pretty simple it depends on your application. This PTZ security camera pictured on the left is a custom mounted Pan Tilt Zoom (PTZ) IP camera. The management team of this rather large public housing authority uses PTZ cameras with fixed cameras. The fixed IP cameras provide an overall view while the PTZ camera can focus in on Problem Areas around the property. In our opinion, this is the best use of a PTZ camera.
We do not recommend using a Pan Tilt Zoom camera in place of multiple fixed cameras. When using a PTZ camera as a scanning camera, you can only see roughly 90 degrees or less at any given moment. PTZ Cameras that are set to scan to cover a large area can only see 1/4 of the covered area at any given time.
PTZ security cameras – Our Clients find PTZ cameras useful in manufacturing, warehousing and industrial applications where they are helpful in checking on progress, inventory, showing details to an engineer or offsite manager. Another useful PTZ surveillance application is with security guards watching monitors. The ability to quickly zoom into an event while recording makes them very useful. The 30x zoom qualities of the PTZ IP cameras makes them effective for tracking objects out of the normal IP camera viewing range.
Today’s Megapixel IP Cameras up to 250 Megapixel allow virtual PTZ security camera functions. The pixel density is high enough to use a virtual PTZ function within the picture without the utilization of a motorized lens. This feature far surpasses a PTZ camera when the cameras are not actively controlled by a trained operator. The downside is you lose the ability to change the position of the lens. The custom pole mount we designed and fabricated in the above picture gives the IP Camera capacity to move and capture 300 degrees using the Pan function. Keep in mind most PTZ cameras are limited to viewing 90 degrees or less at any given moment.
